On November 16th 2012, in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, took place the Gala of the Laureates of the 10th edition of the Pearls of the Polish Economy. During the Gala, besides the awards for the representatives of the economy and culture, has also been also presented the Special Honorary Pearl. It was awarded for the second time, last year the first laureate of the Special Honorary Pearl has been Prof. Jerzy Buzek. This year it was presented to Prof. Henryk Skarżyński, in recognition of his accomplishments in the fields of science and medicine.
– I am greatly honored to receive this Pearl today, and to join Prof. Jerzy Buzek, its first laureate. When 20 years ago, in 1992, for the first time in Poland and in this part of Europe we performed cochlear implantation, returning a deaf person to the world of sounds, that event reverberated widely in all medias. Then I realized how great a problem we have touched and how great hopes we have awakened. Today, in the World Hearing Center in Kajetany we perform each day the largest number of hearing improving surgeries in the world – as many as seventy per day, but still the waiting list is enormous. I thank the Chapter from all my heart not only for this recognition, but most of all for appreciating the huge scale of the problem caused by the increasing number of people with various hearing problems. – said Prof. Henryk Skarżyński thanking for the award.
The Special Honorary Pearl is an exceptional distinction bestowed to the distinguished personages and institutions whom scientific attainments, experience, prestige, ethical and personal qualities and impeccable opinion qualify as the ambassadors of the highest Polish values.
The Candidates for the Pearls of the Polish Economy are selected and judged by the distinguished economists from the Institute of Economics of the Polish Academy of Sciences who evaluate the effectiveness, dynamism and liquidity of the leading Polish enterprises, as well as, together with the Chapter, award the eminent Poles.
The Gala of the Pearls of the Polish Economy was organized by the editor of the monthly journal published in English, the Polish Market. The event was held under the patronage of the deputy prime minister and Minister of Economy Mr Waldemar Pawlak and the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Michał Kleiber.
