Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing – the scientific and research unit of A+ category

From among 963 scientific and research units evaluated by the Scientific Units Evaluation Committee for the effects of scientific and research&development activity in the years 2009-2012, for the first time in the history of Polish science, the Committee has selected 37 best units and qualified them as category “A+”. Only two medical research institutes has entered this narrow group: the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing and the Children’s Memorial Health Institute. At the same time these units are the only among departmental institutes which has received such high rate.

The Committee evaluated each unit taking under consideration 4 criteria: scientific and creative achievements, scientific potential, material effects of scientific activity, other effects of scientific activity. The Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, among others, received the best evaluation for material effects of scientific activity – with the result of 324,82 the Institute declassed other scientific and research units from the register.

Obtaining the highest category by the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing confirms the fact that this is one of the best managed institutions of this type in the country (it is possible that is the only from among 16 research institutes dependent upon the Ministry of Health, which has never been indebted). The recognition of the Committee Members was also received for 28 degrees of assistant professors, M.D. Ph.Ds., health science and humanities Ph.Ds., 60-70 hearing improving surgeries per day, the organization of 169 conferences and scientific workshops, 1295 scientific publications – Polish and international, 4 858 papers and speeches during the national and international conferences, over 300 awards and distinctions, and this is only part of the scientific, clinical, medical and organizational output of prof. Henryk Skarżyński and the team of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, which is the youngest team of the departmental institute acting in health area.

For last 17 years the number of surgery procedures performer in the Institute has increased from 1,000 to over 18,000, as well as the number of consultations and examinations – up to 200,000 per year. Within over a dozen of years of realization of total and partial deafness program approx. 4,000 hearing implantations have been performed, numerous projects, pioneer scientific and clinical programs have been carried out, and the results obtained have had an impact on the state health policy and set up new standards of the therapeutic procedure for people with hearing disorders in the country and in the world.
