The dynamic development of digital technologies allows for a huge increase in the use of telemedicine in healthcare – argue the authors of the report “How to Effectively Use the Potential of Telemedicine in the Polish Healthcare System”, presented on Tuesday, 19 June 2018, at the conference in Warsaw. The guests of the conference were MEP Michał Boni and Prof. Henryk Skarżyński, who gave a lecture on: “Telemedicine in Modern Healthcare.”
In a 150-page report prepared by the Telemedicine Foundation Working Group, the experts draw, among others, attention to the “growing demand for seeking innovative solutions in healthcare, including e-health solutions that ensure the improvement of quality and increase the system’s efficiency, resulting in particular from the aging of society in Europe, also in Poland, and the decline in the availability of medical staff” .
– These global trends lend substance to a wider discussion on the use of telemedicine potential in Poland, which is already happening and is reflected in the announcement of the publication “e-Health Strategy for 2018-2022 – authors of the study emphasize.
Continuing the topic of the enormous potential of telemedicine Prof. Henryk Skarżyński presented, among others ideas and possibilities of the world’s first National Teleaudiology Network, which was created by him in response to and as a solution to the problems of patients living far away from the World Hearing Center: “The National Teleaudiology Network is a perfect solution, enabling the patient to consult a specialist from the Center in a collaborating center near his place of residence. For patients after CI implantation, follow-up visits to the Institute often involve a long and time-consuming journey, which can be very tiresome. This is particularly troublesome for the youngest patients tired of traveling they may have difficulty with focusing and concentrating during the examination and checkup of implants. This, in turn, negatively affects the therapy results and makes the information obtained from the patient during examination and consultation be more likely burdened with a risk of error and significantly hampers the optimal selection of the performance parameters of the auditory implants. The necessity of the patient’s visit to the Institute also entails costs, which in many cases are a large financial burden for the patient or his family. The great importance of this project is proved by obtaining the 21st Century Achievement Awards for the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing in The Computerworld Honors Program in the category of healthcare and being awarded – Gold Medal of the Prix Galien International Competition -recognized as the medical Nobel.”
The report, which has been prepared for the general information purposes, is aimed at raising public awareness about telemedicine and initiating a discussion on its role in the Polish healthcare system.
