14th global videoconference LION Global Otology – Neurotology Live Surgical Broadcast in the World Hearing Center

The annual global LION videoconference: Global Otology – Neurotology Live Surgical Broadcast is due to take place on 13-14 May 2019. During such conferences, organised for 14 years now, the best surgeons from otosurgery centers all over the world are invited to give “live” demonstrations of advanced otosurgery and neuro-otosurgery techniques.

There will be 32 centers participating in this year’s LION videoconference: from Poland, Belgium, Sweden, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Turkey, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and the United States. The demonstrations will cover 50 operations in the following areas: treatment of otosclerosis, ossiculoplasty, cholesteatoma, middle ear implants, bone conduction implants, cochlea implants and neurotology.

From the World Hearing Centre, two operations performed by Prof. Henryk Skarżyński will be broadcast: on Monday – a world unique partial deafness surgery with electric complementing of residual hearing according to Skarżyński’s six-step method performed on a teenage girl, while on Tuesday “Skarżyński Piston” passive implant will be inserted in patients with otosclerosis.
Initiated in 2006, the LION project aims to use the latest teleconference technologies to provide a continuous training for otolaryngologists all over the world. It includes a permanent global interactive education network that provides a direct access to knowledge and experience of international experts in otology and neurotology to any physician who has a computer and Internet access. The key element of this program is annual videoconferences with participation of otosurgeons representing the leading centers worldwide.

Each edition of the conferences is observed by a great many of viewers in conference rooms at hospitals and medical universities worldwide. Demonstration surgeries broadcast from world leading centers can also be watched at the modern teleconference studio at the World Hearing Center in Kajetany. The participants can take part in a discussion and ask questions to the surgeons presenting different surgical techniques.
